PSHE

Intent

Our intention is that, when children leave Crookhill Primary School, they do so with the knowledge and skills that will empower them to make positive decisions about their health related behaviour and have the understanding and emotions to be able to play an active role within society, becoming responsible global citizens.  We want all of our children to have high aspirations and belief in themselves and realise they can achieve anything if they put their mind to it and work hard.

What do we want for our pupils?

  • To raise self esteem and develop self-respect, confidence and empathy when sharing thoughts and opinions with others and within relationships
  • Develop skills for a healthier, safer lifestyle
  • Develop an attitude of a responsible global citizen
  • To show tolerance of others beliefs, religions and life choices
  • To build positive, respectful relationships with other people
  • Develop skills to cope with influences from peers and the media
  • To help pupils understand their sexual feelings and behaviours, so they can lead fulfilling and enjoyable lives

Implementation

How do we deliver PSHE at Crookhill Primary School?

  • All pupils will have weekly PSHE lessons
  • Our COVID-19 recovery curriculum has PSHE at the centre
  • All staff have Medium Term Planning which has been developed by Danielle O’Shaughnessy (PSHE lead) in guidance with The PSHE Association to meet the needs of our pupils
  • Planning is mapped across Key Stages and is constantly reviewed to meet the needs of our children and is always age appropriate
  • LGBT+ issues and equal opportunities are discussed at an age appropriate level using good quality books where possible
  • Visitors are used to complement and add to our curriculum
  • Assemblies are planned across the year with PSHE/SMSC themes weaved throughout the year – always focussing on National and Global issues where appropriate

Impact

At Crookhill Primary School, we believe that our PSHE curriculum is meaningful in that it is key to our children becoming confident, tolerant, empowered adults that can approach real life situations with confidence and resilience.

  • Children will be will prepared for the next stages in their life, including puberty and transitions to secondary schools
  • Children will be tolerant and accept different lifestyles that other people may lead and be respectful of these differences
  • Children will build up a sense of responsibility of being a positive, respectful, global citizen
  • Children will be able to make well informed choices about various aspects of their health and lifestyle
  • Children will be able to keep themselves safe and manage various risky situations (safeguarding)
